Sunflower Seed Shell

by Terry Trowbridge

If a Lego figure made a shield
from a to-scale sea turtle shell

If a dragon scale weighed
the same as air (which maybe they do)

Emptiness is not nothingness after all

The seed is removed and: a leftover thin planchette
of grey wood without Ouija texts at which to point

Evidence that a seed is gone,
like Ouija, a leftover of a life missing

The thing that is here is a thing that is gone
small although it might be

Canadian Terry Trowbridge is grateful to the Ontario Arts Council for their writing grants.
