Local Variation, Haecceitas & Equinox

by Eric Burke

Local Variation

She stews wood ash
over our fire,

pools tallow
with her parents,

tries to stay
clean.

Haecceitas

Figs the only fruit,

I refuse to turn
from a life of ritualized poverty.

Equinox

They look skyward
together, last season’s hackberries still on the trees.
